Xinjiang
I was born in Kashgar. For a first visit, leave room for more than the famous sights: a bakery, a tea break, or a street you follow because something catches your attention. The old-city neighbourhoods bring together homes, workshops, visitor-facing streets and everyday commerce; parts have also been substantially rebuilt. Look at the city as it is now, ask before photographing people closely, and give Kashgar time of its own rather than treating it only as an evening between a flight and the road into the mountains.
