I was born in Kashgar. My suggestion for a first visit is simple: leave some of the day unassigned. A bakery, a shop or a conversation should not always compete with the next scheduled stop. Treat Yarkand as a separate place with its own history and music, not as another version of Kashgar.

What to see
Kashgar beyond the photographed streets
Notice what shops sell, where people are going and how residential lanes differ from areas prepared for visitors. Ask about the purpose of a building or craft instead of reading its full history from an old-looking surface.
Yarkand as a separate stop
Yarkand’s history, royal cemetery and association with Amannisa Khan give it a role beyond more old-city photographs. Confirm which sites are currently open and included.
Muqam with context
Uyghur Muqam is an intangible cultural heritage tradition with regional forms. When a visit includes music, ask what you are hearing, who is performing and how the presentation was arranged.

How to explore
Choose the market you mean
Confirm the name, address, operating day and visitor arrangements. At a working market, stay out of transactions and animal movement and do not assume every market operates on Sunday.
Photograph with permission
A smile is not automatically agreement to a close portrait. Ask clearly, accept a refusal without negotiation and remember that religious buildings, private courtyards and visitor attractions have different rules.
Leave room for food and ordinary time
One unhurried neighbourhood walk, a proper meal and room for something noticed along the way can be more memorable than a long sequence of scheduled stops.

- Yarkand is also called Shache in Chinese-language route and booking information.
- A night food street, daily bazaar and livestock market are not interchangeable.
- Confirm a market’s exact name, location, operating day and current visitor arrangements.
- Ask clearly before a close portrait and take particular care with photographs of children.
- Do not photograph security personnel, checkpoints or security installations.
- Explain dietary needs directly; a regional dish does not have one fixed recipe everywhere.
Parts of Kashgar’s old city have been substantially rebuilt, while homes and everyday commerce remain alongside visitor-facing streets. In Yarkand, the history of the Yarkand Khanate and the name Amannisa Khan provide a useful way into the regional forms of Uyghur Muqam without reducing the tradition to background entertainment.
