Tashkorgan

After the drive through the mountains, Tashkorgan is somewhere to stop moving for a while. The town is a place in its own right, with streets to walk, places to eat, Stone City above the valley and the wetland landscape often called Golden Grassland below. It is associated with the Tajik communities of China’s Pamirs and should not be treated as a smaller version of Kashgar. At roughly 3,100 metres, an overnight stay also needs a sensible altitude plan and an alternative for anyone who feels unwell.
