01Airport to hotel
Four answers are enough for a useful first recommendation. This is a planning aid, not a live timetable—always check operating hours on your travel date.
Your calmest route
PVG → hotel
The lowest-cost route for a daytime arrival with light luggage. Allow about one hour to People’s Square plus the final hotel connection.
Use the official queue if the train is disrupted, the hotel connection is awkward or the flight has taken more out of you than expected.

Do the small setup while your home number, bank and booking emails are still easy to reach. The rest can wait until after check-in.

03The first day
A successful first day ends with a functioning phone, the correct hotel and enough energy for tomorrow. Everything else is optional.
Hour 0–1
Keep your passport, hotel details and onward ticket easy to reach. The official arrival card is free; it is not a paid visa-approval service.
Hour 1–2
Connect to data, open the hotel in Amap, keep the Chinese address visible and make one small payment test if your wallet is ready.
Hour 2–4
Use the route that still works with your bags and energy. Ignore unsolicited drivers inside the arrivals hall.
Hour 4–10
Confirm Wi-Fi, save the front-desk number, eat nearby and take only a short walk if you still feel alert.
Hour 10–24
Pin tomorrow’s first stop, check any passport reservation and make sure both your main payment and backup are accessible.

Recover the next handoff. Do not stand in arrivals trying to build a perfect China setup from scratch.

04 Hotel registration
Staying in a hotel
Present the original passport at check-in. You do not need to visit a police station to repeat normal hotel registration.
Private or non-hotel stay
The guest or host generally completes the registration through a public-security window or Shanghai’s current online channel.

Landing late
Use a licensed pre-arranged transfer with flight tracking or the official taxi queue. The PVG late-night bus is a budget backup only when its current stops fit the hotel. Check in, find food and stop for the night.
Long layover
Entry permission, immigration, baggage, city travel, the return journey and security all reduce the useful window. Under six hours at PVG, remain at the airport. With ten to twelve hours, one city area may be realistic—subject to current entry rules.

Metro Line 2 is best for budget travelers with light luggage during operating hours. An official taxi or licensed transfer is usually calmer for late arrivals, families, heavy bags or a tired first visit. The Maglev is fast to Longyang Road, not to most hotels.
Eligible contactless UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB cards can currently be tapped at Shanghai Metro gates. Enable contactless small payments, use the same card to enter and exit and keep a backup in case the issuer declines the charge.
Yes. Current airport guidance says short-term 7-, 15- and 30-day China Telecom SIM cards are available with a passport at International Services Shanghai counters.

No. Check the live last-train time using the moment you expect to leave arrivals, not the scheduled landing time. Official taxis and the PVG late-night bus are overnight alternatives.
Hotels register their foreign guests. If you stay in a private residence or another non-hotel accommodation, you or the host generally need to complete accommodation registration within 24 hours of check-in.
Current national and Shanghai guidance does not support an old foreign-guest-qualification barrier. Ask the hotel to verify its registration procedure, keep the booking evidence and call 12345 or 12367 if the issue remains unresolved.
Possibly, but entry eligibility and useful city time are separate questions. Check current official transit rules, obtain any required temporary entry permission and preserve a conservative return buffer. Under six hours at PVG is usually not useful city time.
