01Before the flight
Are you payment-ready—or only card-linked?
Finish identity, bank access and fallbacks while you still have your normal SIM, issuer support and time to recover. Tick only what is true today.
Treat the system as not ready yet.
This checklist stays in your browser session. It asks for no card, passport or account details.
02Safe setup
Set up the parts that can fail before you travel.
App labels move. The underlying chain is stable: account, identity, eligible card, issuer approval, second route and an independent fallback.
- 01
Register with a number you can keep using.
Current official guidance allows a foreign or Chinese mobile number. The important part is continuing to receive account and bank security messages during the trip.
- 02
Follow the identity path shown in the app.
Passport or face verification can be requested for risk review, higher limits, transport QR codes or other functions. Enter names and document details exactly as requested; do not improvise around a failed review.
- 03
Add an eligible international card.
Official guidance lists major networks including Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover across the products. The live card-binding screen is the final authority for your account.
- 04
Approve the issuer check.
Your bank can reject wallet binding or a later transaction even when the app accepts the card details. Check that overseas and online transactions are enabled and that no fraud-review action is waiting.
- 05
Build the second path before departure.
Set up the other wallet and use a different card or issuer if you can. Two apps funded by the same blocked card are not two independent backups.
- 06
Test carefully, then keep the promise small.
A legitimate remote merchant purchase can test part of the chain, but it cannot prove that every mainland merchant or large checkout will work. A failed personal transfer is not a readiness test.
Protect the credential, not just the phone
Never save or share a payment-code screenshot.Open a fresh code in the official app. Never give a stranger your OTP, CVV, password, full card number or complete passport image.03How the QR route works
Merchant purchase and personal transfer are not the same thing.
An international-card setup is designed for consumption at eligible merchants. The code direction and the merchant’s account type can change the result.
Designed for tourist cards
The merchant scans you
Open a fresh payment code in the official app, confirm the funding card and let the cashier scan it.Designed for tourist cards
You scan a merchant QR
Scan the merchant collection code and review the merchant name, amount, funding card and disclosed fee before confirming.May reject international-card funding
You scan a personal collection code
Ask for a merchant code, ask the seller to scan your payment code, switch wallet or use cash. Do not state that every small seller will fail. Not a tourist-card payment test
Transfer or red packet
Weixin Pay’s published guidance says international cards support daily purchases but not money transfers or red packets. Treat the payment page as final. If a personal code fails, ask for a merchant payment route, ask the seller to scan your code, switch wallet or use cash. Do not treat a failed transfer as proof that your wallet is broken.
04Fees, limits and exchange
Three different costs can sit behind one payment.
Separate the wallet service fee, your issuer’s foreign-transaction fee and the card-network or issuer exchange rate. Review the live confirmation screen.
Published baseline for a single international-card-funded transaction.
Published baseline; the payment page and current agreement control.
This is separate from the fee disclosed by the wallet.
The published visitor ceilings are USD 5,000 per transaction and USD 50,000 per year. Your issuer, wallet, merchant, mini program or risk-control system can set a lower limit. The live product page is final.
05At the counter
The 60-second payment rescue.
Move down the ladder once. Do not repeat the identical transaction until you know what happened to the first one.
- 01
Stop. Check whether the wallet and bank show successful, pending or declined.
- 02
If money appears deducted, ask the merchant to check the receipt before you pay again.
- 03
Change the payment direction: let the cashier scan your live code or request a merchant QR.
- 04
Switch from Alipay to WeChat Pay, or from WeChat Pay to Alipay.
- 05
Select another linked card, preferably from another issuer or network.
- 06
For an urgent purchase, use RMB cash or a physical card if the merchant has a compatible terminal.
- 07
Save the error, merchant, time, amount, wallet, status and card last four digits.
- 08
Contact the wallet for account restrictions and the issuer for authorization declines.
Do not do this in panic
- Do not keep retrying the same pending purchase.
- Do not delete the account or repeatedly remove and re-add the same card.
- Do not hand over your phone, passport or banking credentials.
- Do not pay twice before the merchant checks the first receipt.
Check country code and SMS access; then use official in-app support.
Stop repeated attempts, preserve the error and escalate to human support.
Ask whether the bank rejected wallet binding; try another eligible card.
Check the bank app, then change route, card, wallet or merchant checkout.
Request a merchant payment route or use cash.
Use direct card checkout, another issuer, merchant POS or advance booking.
Say this to your card issuer
I am traveling in mainland China and using my card through Alipay or Weixin Pay for a merchant purchase. Please confirm whether you declined the card-binding request or transaction, whether international and card-not-present transactions are enabled, and whether any 3-D Secure or fraud-review action is waiting.
06Real travel situations
Use the checkout that fits the purchase.
A routine cafe, table-order mini program, railway checkout and hotel deposit can reach different payment routes even when they all display the same wallet name.
Check which linked card is selected.
The menu can open even when final card-funded checkout fails.
A personal collection route may reject international-card funding.
Do not make the airport journey depend on one wallet.
Transport QR activation can have a separate identity check.
A coffee payment does not prove a larger rail purchase will clear.
Confirm deposit amount and accepted card networks in advance.
Do not discover afterward that only a personal transfer is accepted.
07Pending, duplicate and refunded
First decide what the transaction actually is.
A bank notification is not always a settled charge. Compare the wallet, merchant receipt and issuer status before paying again or opening a dispute.
Pause
Save both screens and let the merchant check receipt status.
Do not repay
Show the transaction record and ask the merchant to reconcile it.
Change route
Use another wallet, card, merchant checkout or cash.
Keep proof
Preserve merchant initiation and the original transaction until it posts.
Refund timing depends on the merchant, wallet, acquirer, card network and issuer. There is no safe universal number of days to promise.
08When both apps fail
Your backup must leave the phone.
China’s official visitor guidance recognizes mobile payment, physical bank cards and RMB cash. Keep at least one route independent of the device and bank you use most.
Two wallets
Alipay and WeChat Pay installed, verified when asked and ready before the problem.
Two issuers if possible
A second card from the same bank may fail for the same issuer-level reason.
Physical card + RMB
Cash is an official payment option and eligible foreign cards can withdraw RMB at compatible ATMs.
A protected first ride
Prepay, use an official queue, or keep enough cash to reach the hotel without either wallet.
09At the awkward moment
Show the merchant the sentence you need.
These phrases ask for a compatible route, prevent a duplicate payment and keep the conversation focused on the transaction.

The questions that appear after card binding.
The careful answer is often conditional: the platform, issuer, merchant route, account and amount can all matter.
01Do I need a Chinese phone number for Alipay or WeChat Pay?
No for registration under current official guidance: a foreign or Chinese number can be used. You still need reliable mobile data and continued access to the number or banking app used for security checks.
02Do I need a Chinese bank account?
No for ordinary tourist merchant purchases funded by an eligible international card. Your issuing bank must still approve card binding and each transaction.
03Which international cards are supported?
Current government guidance lists Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Diners Club and Discover across mobile-payment products. Availability varies by product and account, so the live binding screen is final.
04Is Alipay or WeChat Pay easier for tourists?
With Amu recommends trying Alipay first and preparing WeChat Pay as the independent backup. That is practical travel guidance, not a guarantee that one platform is universally more reliable.
05Can I test the wallet before arriving in China?
A legitimate remote merchant purchase can test part of the setup. It cannot guarantee mainland merchant acceptance, and a failed personal transfer or red packet is not a useful test.
06Why did my transfer or red packet fail?
International-card tourist setups are primarily for merchant purchases. Weixin Pay’s published guidance says international cards do not support red packets and money transfers; follow the current payment-page instructions.
07Why is a linked card still declined?
Card binding tests only one stage. The issuing bank, wallet risk control, merchant payment route, transaction amount or checkout can still reject the later purchase.
08When is the 3% service fee charged?
The published baseline is no additional mobile-payment service fee for a single international-card-funded transaction of RMB 200 or less and 3% above RMB 200. Promotions can change this. Review the disclosed fee before confirming.
09Who determines the exchange rate?
The card network and issuing bank can determine conversion and may add their own foreign-transaction charge. That cost is separate from any wallet service fee.
10Why did a small payment work but a train or hotel purchase fail?
A higher amount, a different merchant checkout, a mini program, a deposit or an issuer risk rule can follow a different authorization path. Use direct international-card checkout, another issuer, merchant POS or advance booking.
11What if the bank shows a charge but the merchant did not receive it?
Do not immediately pay again. Compare the wallet and merchant status, save both screens and determine whether the card entry is pending, reversed or completed before escalating.
12How long does a refund take?
There is no safe universal promise. Timing depends on merchant initiation, wallet processing, the card network and your issuer. Preserve the original transaction and refund evidence.
13Is cash accepted in China?
Yes. Official visitor guidance keeps RMB cash, bank cards and mobile payments as valid options. Digital payment is usually more convenient, but cash is an important independent backup.
