01Seven days before
Finish these five things before the flight.
Do the identity and payment setup while you still have your normal number, bank access and time to recover from a failed verification.
- 01
Make data work on landing.
Choose roaming, a travel eSIM or a Chinese SIM. Keep your home number able to receive bank and verification messages.
- 02
Build two ways to pay.
Set up both Alipay and WeChat, link more than one card if possible, and keep a physical card plus RMB 300–500 away from your phone.
- 03
Save the destination in Chinese.
Install Amap, then save your hotel’s Chinese name, full address, district, phone number and entrance—not just an English map pin.
- 04
Use one passport identity everywhere.
Carry the original passport used for your visa, arrival formalities, accommodation and any 12306 train booking.
- 05
Plan the first handoff.
Know your terminal, official transport choice and exact pickup point. Save the hotel address offline before the aircraft door opens.
Entry rule update
As of August 20, 2026, China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy covers 57 eligible countries and 65 ports. Eligibility still depends on your passport, route, ports and permitted stay area—verify the live rule before travel.
Check the current NIA notice02Phone and data
Choose for the number you need—not just the data price.
For a typical short holiday, a travel eSIM is often the lowest-friction choice. A Chinese SIM matters when a local number is part of the job.
01 · Roaming
One to three days, minimal setup
Keeps your normal number and SMS, but can cost more. Confirm the plan before flying.
02 · Travel eSIM
Most short trips
Fast data setup before landing. Many plans are data-only, so check number, hotspot, activation time and routing conditions.
03 · Chinese SIM
Longer stays or local SMS
Gives domestic service and a local number, but normally needs passport registration at an official counter.
If data does not work after landing
Stay inside the terminal Wi-Fi zone, check that the correct SIM is handling mobile data, and keep your home SIM available for banking SMS. At Shanghai, use the 24-hour international-traveler service center at Pudong T1/T2 or Hongqiao T1 before leaving.

One wallet is convenient. Two wallets are a plan.
Register Alipay and WeChat before departure, complete passport verification when requested, and link cards from different issuers when possible.

Move down the ladder. Do not keep repeating the same tap.
- 01Switch the scan direction: scan the merchant’s code or show your payment code.
- 02Choose a different linked card inside the same wallet.
- 03Change from Alipay to WeChat Pay, or the reverse.
- 04Use a physical card where its network logo is accepted.
- 05Use RMB cash, then contact the issuing bank if authorization was rejected.
Foreign-number registration and supported international cards are available, but no card or wallet is guaranteed to work in every transaction.
04Maps and rides
The destination is an entrance, not a blue pin.
Amap now has multilingual navigation and an English ride-hailing interface. Save the Chinese place name and choose a named gate or official pickup zone.

- Match the full plate number.
- Use translated in-app messages if the driver calls.
- Send a landmark screenshot when the pin is unclear.
- Use the official taxi queue or metro if booking fails.
- Do not accept an unsolicited airport ride.
05Shanghai arrival
Protect the first hour. The rest of the day gets easier.
Do not leave the airport simply because you have cleared Customs. Leave when data, destination and payment backup are all usable.

Immigration and baggage
Use the visa or visa-free basis that actually applies to your passport and route. Collect baggage and complete any required Customs declaration.
- 02
Before exit
Connect before leaving Wi-Fi
Activate data, keep your home SIM available for SMS and open the saved hotel address in Amap.
- 03
If setup fails
Use the airport service center
Pudong T1, Pudong T2 and Hongqiao T1 have 24-hour international-traveler service centers for SIM, payment, transport, exchange, maps and app setup.
- 04
Before the ride
Create one cash backup
Withdraw or exchange a modest amount, ideally with smaller notes, and test one small mobile payment.
- 05
Leave officially
Confirm the car and pickup zone
Use metro, the official taxi queue, a confirmed pickup or an app-booked ride. Match the plate before entering a DiDi.
Hotels register your accommodation when you check in with the original passport. If you stay in a private home or other non-hotel accommodation in Shanghai, you or the host must register within 24 hours through the available police service or online channel.
06High-speed rail
Your passport is the ticket identity.
Complete foreign-passport verification in the official English 12306 channel before tickets open, then carry the same original passport through station entry and exit.
Manual passport review can take time. Do it before a holiday booking window.
The standard presale period includes the travel date, unless Railway announces a change.
Allow time for security, identity checks, the correct waiting area and the gate.
072026 crowd calendar
Some dates change the operating system of the trip.
Do not treat a national travel peak as a normal itinerary with more people. Ticket release, transport buffers, hotel choice and the number of daily stops all change.
Spring Festival travel rush
The 40-day chunyun period puts exceptional pressure on trains and domestic transport. The official holiday itself is Feb 15–23.
Labor Day holiday
The strongest spring warning for Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou and major attractions nationwide.
Mid-Autumn Festival
A compressed family and short-break travel peak. Reserve trains and attractions early.
National Day Golden Week
The year’s clearest warning: expect intense demand, crowd controls and limited flexibility.
CIIE in Shanghai
Not a public holiday, but expect extra demand around Hongqiao and the National Exhibition and Convention Center.
Add a practical two-to-three-day buffer around the largest holidays when comparing transport and hotel availability. That is planning guidance, not an extension of the official holiday.
08When something goes wrong
Call the official number first. Then solve the logistics.
Give the exact location, describe what happened and provide a working contact number. Send someone to a visible entrance when responders need help finding you.
