Sayram Lake opens the view across broad water towards distant mountains. It lies in Bortala beside the approach to the Ili region, rather than inside Ili Prefecture, and its surface is about 2,071 metres above sea level. Instead of moving constantly in search of a better photograph, choose a permitted stop and stay long enough to notice the water, clouds and shoreline changing. An autumn visit should be chosen for the landscape on that date, not for summer images of flower-filled meadows.
