Zhujiajiao offers the clearest water-town contrast to central Shanghai without an intercity journey. The historic streets are open to walk, while gardens, small museums and boat rides are separate paid choices. Take Metro Line 17, allow for the final 1.5-kilometre approach from the station, and arrive before 10:00 so North Street and Fangsheng Bridge still feel like a town rather than a queue.
