Self-Driving in Tibet with a Foreign Vehicle

Foreign travellers cannot treat the Tibet Autonomous Region as an independent, flexible road trip. A qualified travel agency must arrange the applicable Tibet travel confirmation and itinerary, while the vehicle and each driver separately complete China customs and temporary road-document procedures. The approved route, border areas, current road controls, lodging, fuel range and sleeping-altitude profile all need case-specific checks before departure and again immediately before each affected stage.
