Temporary Chinese Plates for Foreign-Registered Vehicles

A foreign registration plate is not enough for ordinary road travel in mainland China. A temporarily imported vehicle needs a Chinese temporary-entry plate and registration document tied to its customs admission, safety inspection, Chinese compulsory insurance and approved route. The paper document records the vehicle and permitted corridor. It can be valid for no more than three months and cannot be extended, even when the separate customs admission period is longer.

02Minimum legal cover

International cover does not automatically replace Chinese compulsory insurance.

What the policy must show

National rule
  • An insured period at least as long as the vehicle's temporary-entry period
  • The correct vehicle identifier
  • Insurer, liability cover, claims contact and available language support

What the statutory limit means

National rule

When liable, the current total is RMB 200,000: RMB 180,000 death/disability, RMB 18,000 medical and RMB 2,000 property. This is minimum liability cover, not comprehensive vehicle-damage protection.

03Read the issued paper

The route line matters as much as the plate number.

Placement and control

National rule
  • Place the paper car plate inside the front windscreen on the right.
  • Carry a temporary-entry motorcycle plate with the motorcycle for inspection.
  • Check vehicle identity, permitted area or route and validity.
  • Driving outside the printed route is not an ordinary itinerary adjustment.
