Driving Your Own Vehicle into China

Yes, a foreign-registered vehicle can be driven in mainland China in limited, pre-arranged cases. It is not a walk-up border process. Before travel, confirm the exact entry port, exit port and route; arrange customs temporary admission, inspection and Chinese compulsory insurance; and obtain temporary Chinese road documents for both the vehicle and every driver. For a temporarily imported foreign vehicle, the road permission follows the approved route and is limited to no more than three months.

Can this case move to review?

This checker identifies missing evidence. It cannot approve or guarantee a border crossing.

01Do not collapse these into one permit

Six permissions have to line up.

Each permission solves a different problem. One approval never silently replaces another.

1. Personal entry

National rule

A visa or applicable visa-free entry gets the traveller across immigration. It does not import the vehicle.

2. Customs temporary admission

National rule

Customs records the vehicle, secures the potential tax risk and requires re-export and cancellation.

3. Inspection and compulsory insurance

National rule

The road-document file needs vehicle-safety evidence and Chinese compulsory motor liability cover.

4. Temporary vehicle plate and registration

National rule

The paper road document controls the vehicle, route and road-validity period.

5. A permit for every driver

National rule

Each driver needs a temporary Chinese driving permit matching the foreign licence and the vehicle.

6. Regional or activity approvals

Local procedure

Tibet, border areas and an organized itinerary can add a separate travel and local-operations track.

02Dependency order

Plan the exit before you enter.

1–3 · Establish the corridor

Operational advice
  • Name the exact Chinese and counterpart entry and exit ports.
  • Obtain traceable Chinese-side feasibility confirmation.
  • Confirm how every traveller will enter China.

4–6 · Build the filing chain

Operational advice
  • Prepare ownership, driver, technical and Chinese-translation records.
  • Arrange customs security, entry and exit brokers, and cancellation ownership.
  • Arrange inspection and compulsory insurance for the full road-permit period.

7–9 · Issue, drive and close

National rule
  • Complete the temporary plate and driver-permit process after entry as arranged.
  • Drive only within the route printed on the temporary vehicle document.
  • Re-export on time, obtain cancellation proof and track security release.

01Escalation flags

These cases need a specialist review.

Ownership and vehicle flags

Operational advice
  • The registered owner is not travelling, or the vehicle is leased, financed or company-owned.
  • RV, motorhome, trailer, caravan, sidecar, heavy or materially modified vehicle.
  • Multiple drivers, multiple vehicles or a foreign licence category that does not clearly match.

Route and history flags

Operational advice
  • Different entry and exit ports, more than three months on Chinese roads, or a flexible route with no approved fallback.
  • Tibet Autonomous Region, Ali, Everest, G219 or another border/sensitive area.
  • Unresolved Chinese traffic violation or crash record.

02No fake precision

A useful quote explains its cost drivers.

There is no responsible single China price or universal 30/60/90-day promise. The route, ports, vehicle and date decide the work.

Customs and vehicle

Operational advice
  • Security or deposit and vehicle valuation
  • Entry and exit customs brokers
  • Translation, inspection, insurance, plate and driver permits

Route operations

Operational advice
  • Organizer, itinerary approval, guide or support vehicle where applicable
  • Tibet or remote-route permits, accommodation, dispatch and contingency
  • Fixed-cost sharing differences between a single vehicle and a convoy

03Before paying

Put the fragile handoffs into the contract.

Ports, customs and money

Operational advice
  • Exact entry and exit ports, named local brokers and who owns export cancellation
  • Security provider, calculation, financing cost and refund conditions
  • What happens if inspection, approval or the selected port fails
  • Who pays for a closure-driven reroute or a different exit office

Road documents and route

Operational advice
  • Compulsory insurance, translations, plate and every driver permit are itemized
  • The permitted road corridor matches the itinerary
  • Any guide/escort requirement is identified as law, regional process or operator practice
  • You receive copies of customs, insurance and temporary road documents

CManual gap review

Send a route file without document scans.

The first review needs facts about the people, vehicle, ports and route. Never upload passports, licences or registration scans here.
