Driving Your Own Vehicle into China

Yes, a foreign-registered vehicle can be driven in mainland China in limited, pre-arranged cases. It is not a walk-up border process. Before travel, confirm the exact entry port, exit port and route; arrange customs temporary admission, inspection and Chinese compulsory insurance; and obtain temporary Chinese road documents for both the vehicle and every driver. For a temporarily imported foreign vehicle, the road permission follows the approved route and is limited to no more than three months.

01Do not collapse these into one permit

02Dependency order

Plan the exit before you enter.

1–3 · Establish the corridor

  • Obtain traceable Chinese-side feasibility confirmation.
  • Confirm how every traveller will enter China.

4–6 · Build the filing chain

Operational advice
  • Prepare ownership, driver, technical and Chinese-translation records.
  • Arrange customs security, entry and exit brokers, and cancellation ownership.
  • Arrange inspection and compulsory insurance for the full road-permit period.

7–9 · Issue, drive and close

National rule
  • Complete the temporary plate and driver-permit process after entry as arranged.
  • Drive only within the route printed on the temporary vehicle document.
  • Re-export on time, obtain cancellation proof and track security release.
