On Saturday, 8 August 2026, I drove down from Shanghai and got onto the water in Jiande early in the morning. I had come for the mist. That morning it was there: a low strip above the water, with the hills fading behind it.
This is not a complicated trip. I think it works best as one night away, with the paddling kept simple.
From Shanghai: around four hours by car
Best time: sunrise or early morning
Bring your own board: not necessary for my trip
Stay: one night near the water
Good for: paddleboarding, kayaking, photography and a slow weekend
Go for sunrise
This is the main reason I would come.
On the right morning, mist sits just above the water before and around sunrise. When I went, the water was quiet and the hills kept appearing and disappearing behind it.
I would not promise the same scene every morning. Weather is weather, and the mist may be thinner, heavier or not there at all. I would still try to be near the water before sunrise rather than arriving once the sun is already up. Even without the exact photo, the early hour is calmer.
You do not need your own board
I did not bring my own paddleboard or kayak. I arranged the equipment locally.
I would contact the operator the day before, especially for a weekend morning, and confirm exactly what is included:
- board or kayak
- paddle
- life jacket
- launch point
- the time someone can hand over the equipment
Do not assume everything will be ready at five or six in the morning unless you have arranged it. And wear the life jacket.
Stay the night
I would not leave Shanghai before sunrise, drive for four hours, paddle, and then turn straight around.
It is possible, but it removes the quiet part of the trip.
The version I would do is:
- Leave Shanghai in the afternoon.
- Stay near the water in Jiande.
- Confirm the board, launch point and meeting time before going to sleep.
- Get onto the water around sunrise.
- Paddle for an hour or two.
- Have breakfast slowly.
- Drive back later in the day.
Staying one night gives you room for traffic, a proper rest and an early start without forcing the whole weekend into one long day.
Getting there from Shanghai
My drive was roughly:
Shanghai → Jiaxing → Hangzhou → Jiande
Allow around four hours, but treat that as an estimate rather than a schedule. Where you start in Shanghai, weekend traffic and your final launch point in Jiande can all change it.
I would plan the drive as part of an overnight trip, not as something to optimize down to the minute.
A small note about the water
Jiande is closely tied to the Xin’an River and the wider Qiandao Lake water system. You notice that connection more after spending a morning at water level.
Nongfu Spring also began in this area. The company’s own history says its first production base was built beside Qiandao Lake after its founder came to Jiande in 1996.
That is not a reason to make this trip, but it is a small piece of context for why water sits so visibly in the identity and working life of the area.
What I would bring
Nothing complicated:
- quick-dry clothes
- sandals or water shoes
- towel
- dry bag
- sunscreen
- drinking water
- a full change of clothes
If you take a camera, use a proper dry bag. The mist is good for photographs; water and camera gear are still a bad combination.
My honest recommendation
Come for one night.
Stay close enough to the water that the early start is easy. Arrange the equipment before you go to sleep. Wake up early.
If there is mist, good. If there is not, you still get a quiet hour on the water before most people are around.
That is basically the trip.
Rental availability, launch access and local conditions can change. I’d confirm the details locally before you go, especially if you’re planning to be on the water around sunrise.
